Image quizzes

BJSM has launched an exciting new image quiz based on real-life cases. Take a look at the various images and identify the most likely diagnoses.

ECG interpretation in athletes

Sudden death from intrinsic cardiac conditions remains the leading cause of mortality in athletes during sport. In this context, a resting 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) is utilised as a diagnostic tool in the cardiovascular evaluation of both symptomatic and asymptomatic athletes for conditions associated with sudden cardiac death (SCD). We designed this series of modules based on a series of articles in the BJSM written by an international expert panel. The modules start by identifying benign ECG changes seen in athletes, particularly those that reflect physiological electrical and structural remodelling or autonomic nervous system adaptations that occur as a consequence of regular and sustained physical activity. The modules then explore ECG changes that can indicate a variety of cardiomyopathies or primary electrical diseases. As well as assisting any physician in the context of ECG interpretation and the cardiovascular care of athletes, these modules also provide valuable lessons in interpreting ECGs and highlight dangerous ECG patterns that may be found in any patient. This module was primarily supported by, and produced in association with, the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) and the FIFA Medical Assessment and Research Center (F-MARC).

Educational videos

Physical exam videos

Dr Mark Hutchinson’s world-famous physical examination videos systematically teach you how to conduct a thorough musculoskeletal examination. The videos are conveniently sized so you can focus on one specific test (e.g., Lachmann’s test) at a time. These videos have been viewed over 4 million times on YouTube! New on this website are Dr Michael Reiman's evidence-based physical examination videos of the hip joint. Dr Reiman is Assistant Professor at Duke University and an active clinical researcher, educator and mentor in the Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. View the physical exam videos >>

Exercise prescription videos

These "BJSM approved" exercise prescription videos highlight evidence-based programmes. There are many exercise videos on the web but very few are based on evidence. BJSM aims to provide an archive for exercises that are supported by quality trials. This is consistent with BJSM's commitment to implementation and knowledge translation/exchange. Eccentric exercises

These videos provide a variety of eccentric exercises for injury prevention, performance enhancement, rehabilitation and research. The videos provide information and demonstrations on starting positions, take-off directions, dropping techniques, landing positions, release of muscle activation techniques, and transitions from landing to ending positions. They also point out common mistakes when doing these exercises. Dr. Matt Brughelli is Senior Lecturer at the Auckland University of Technology in Auckland, New Zealand. He completed his PhD thesis in 2009 at Edith Cowan University on eccentric exercise and risk factor for hamstring injuries and has worked as a Post-Doc researcher on sprint eccentric cycling at KU Leuven in Belgium. He has a Masters Degree in Kinesiology from California State University – East Bay in Hayward, California. IOC Educational videos

Healthy Body Image

When girls and women practice sport they can profit from many health benefits.  While these positive attributes far outweigh the risks involved in sports participation, there is scientific evidence that, under certain circumstances, the healthy body image of some female athletes can suffer through sport. In particular, the female athlete triad can have a significant impact on the lives of the girls and women concerned. In response to this health risk, the International Olympic Committee has developed the educational  “Hungry for Gold” videos about the female athlete triad and related health implications. Through the experience of the fictional characters featured in the “Hungry for Gold” videos, viewers will:
  • learn about healthy eating and exercise habits
  • understand the importance of a healthy body image
  • find out how to prevent the development of the female athlete triad.

Sexual Harassment & Abuse in Sport

Harassment and abuse occur in all sports and at all levels with an increased risk at the elite level. The physical and psychological consequences of harassment and abuse are significant for the athlete, their team and for the health and integrity of sport in general. Evidence shows that the abused athlete suffers more injuries and illnesses in addition to an increased risk of sport drop-out. The International Olympic Committee recognises the risks of sexual harassment and abuse in sport and has developed an educational tool that covers the widespread problem of sexual harassment and abuse in sport, the contributing risk factors and the health risks of abuse in sport through the use of fictional characters.View the sexual harassment and sport videos (IOC) >>

Elleboogkliniek.nl (Elbow Clinic)

In Europe around 10% of all people above 25 years of age have pain around the elbow. One-third of these people experience elbow problems in daily life and 1 out of 8 is not able to work. Elleboogkliniek.nl has created a web-based educational platform with instructional videos on physical examination and treatment modalities that can be accessed here: View the clinic's videos here: Physiotherapy >> Physical assessment videos >>

Tendinopathy Toolkits

The purpose of the Tendinopathy Toolkits is to provide clinicians with evidence-based and expert-led information to facilitate clinical decision-making in regards to the management of tendinopathy of the achilles tendon and of the lateral epicondyle. Acknowledgements The Tendinopathy Toolkits were developed by the BC Physical Therapy Knowledge Broker supported by: UBC Department of Physical Therapy (Faculty of Medicine), Physiotherapy Association of BC, Vancouver Coastal Research Institute and Providence Healthcare Research Institute. Reviews papers with MCQs

BJSM Education articles are evidence based reviews by international experts with an accompanying series of validated multiple choice questions (MCQs) for established sports and exercise physicians and sport and exercise physicians in training. You can read the articles here and then proceed to take the MCQs on BMJ Learning. Access the Reviews with MCQs >>

Case-based learning

Case studies

The case studies are generously made available to the readers of the BJSM by the AMSSM, one of our member organisations. The reader is guided through a typical case - history, physical exam, differential diagnosis, lab results, imaging, working diagnosis, course of treatment, final diagnosis and return to play. After each step the reader is challenged to write down his or her own decisions and comments. All is revealed as you work your way to the climax of the case! Access the case studies >>

Interactive Case Histories (ICHs)

ICHs by world leading experts immerse you in an interactive learning environment. These modules are relevant to everyday clinical practice and complement the regular BJSM Education articles. Use these ICHs to learn as you are guided through a real-life consultation, answering questions as you proceed. All BJSM interactive case histories are produced by BMJ learning in association with BJSM and co-hosted on the BJSM Education website and on BMJ Learning - the leading learning website for health professionals. In order to access the BJSM Interactive Case Histories, BJSM subscribers must sign into BJSM with their username and password. All users must also complete a one-time registration on BMJ learning and subsequently log in (with a BMJ Learning username and password) on every visit. Access the ICHs on BMJ Learning >>
